MB&F Legacy Machine Perpetual is now on Palladium

The silver-white palladium case and the charming aquamarine dial are suitable for the most complex models in the Legacy Machine series.

Legacy Machine Perpetual was launched in 2015, marking MB&F’s entry into the upper tier of high-end watches. The perpetual calendar, developed in collaboration with independent watchmaker Stephen McDonnell, was reinvented from the ground up, eliminating the vulnerabilities and flaws of traditional QP. Just one year after its debut, LM permanently took home the 2016 red color of the GPHG Best Perpetual Calendar Watch Award, and then explored white and yellow gold, titanium and platinum. Perpetual movement of traditional machines
Developed in 2015 by independent Northern Irish watchmaking genius Stephen McDonnell (Stephen McDonnell), the stunning Legacy Machine Perpetual overturned the traditional perpetual calendar movement. The lady’s calendar action, the perpetual calendar is a masterpiece of miniaturization, displaying the date, week and month (usually the moon phase) within one month of automatically calculating the day, there is no need to adjust the number of leap year cycles to 2100. In order to improve and enhance the safety of the perpetual calendar, McDonald reinvented the QP complication from the ground up with a fully integrated dedicated movement. Unlike the traditional perpetual calendar mechanism that takes up a lot of space (large lever system architecture), MacDonald’s invention relies on an innovative “mechanical processor”. McDonnell’s mechanical processor uses the default 28-day month instead of the traditional QP’s default setting of 31-day month, that is, to delete extra days in months with fewer days, but to add extra days as needed with the help of the superimposed disc. Do not skip the extra days, thus forming a foolproof system that can protect yourself from wrong operations. Another advantage of the MacDonald movement is that leap years have a dedicated quick setting pusher (using planetary cams) instead of the more traditional QP rolling system (up to 47 months). In addition, the built-in safety function disconnects the quick setting button during the date change, so even if the button is accidentally activated when the date is changed, there is no risk of damaging the movement. It is also surprising that MacDonald managed to place all 581 parts of the movement in a case almost the same size as the LM1.

The Legacy Machine Perpetual Palladium watch displays the perpetual calendar device under the calendar display on the top of the movement mainboard and the time sub-dial, as well as the iconic floating balance wheel of the LM series. Seeing so many elements, you may feel disorganized, but the dial is beautifully symmetrical and clear and easy to read. To showcase the 14 mm balance wheel hovering over the top of the movement, LM Perpetual uses what may be the longest balance pinion in the world to connect the balance wheel to the escapement on the back of the movement.

This may be the first time that Legacy Machine Perpetual is equipped with a palladium case, but MB&F has previously used a palladium case on the 2019 LM101. Palladium is a rare metal in the platinum group. It has a natural silver-white luster. It is harder and more durable than gold and does not require electroplating. As mentioned above, the number of elements on the dial, on the other hand, can become a dog’s dinner. The three hollow sub-dials corresponding to the calendar functions (day, month and date) seem to float above the movement and below the balance wheel. The sub-dial is located on a hidden stud. The traditional perpetual calendar mechanism is technically unable to achieve this function because they prevent the movement of the large dial. Although a large part of the 581 component movement is exposed on the dial, it is still very rewarding from the back. McDonnell’s manual winding fully integrated perpetual calendar movement and its built-in mechanical processor and safety mechanism are powered by a double barrel, which can provide up to 72 hours of power reserve. The spectacular balance wheel on the dial beats at a slow and solemn frequency of 2.5Hz/18,000vph, and you can see the escapement in the hole in the bridge.
